Commonly Used Behavioral Therapies

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most well-known methods used for individuals with IDD, particularly autism spectrum disorder. ABA involves breaking down skills into small, manageable tasks and using reinforcement strategies to increase desired behaviors while decreasing undesired ones.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Though more commonly used for mental health issues, adaptations of CBT can help individuals with IDD understand their thoughts and feelings and develop coping strategies for anxiety or behavior challenges.

Social Skills Training: This involves teaching individuals how to interact appropriately with others. Role-playing, modeling behaviors, and social stories can all be part of this approach.

Our Approach to Behavioural Supports

·        Behavioral Interventions: We use behavioral plans to treat and track target behaviors. These might be implemented as Individualized Support Plans (ISPs), focusing on specific behaviors that need to be addressed, such as aggression or self-injury, and creating strategies to modify those behaviors.

·       Environmental Modifications: Adapting the individual’s environment to promote positive behaviors, such as using visual schedules or sensory-friendly spaces, can be crucial. We recognize that each individual is unique, and their experiences and needs differ.

·        Family Training and Support: Training families on effective behavioral strategies helps ensure consistency between home and therapy settings, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the behavioral therapy.

·       Community Support Services: programs that provide social integration opportunities, job training, and recreational activities can support individuals with IDD. These programs emphasize the development of life skills and social interactions.

·        Collaborative Care:  Involvement of a multidisciplinary team, including psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and educators, ensures comprehensive support that addresses various needs related to the individuals IDD
